She curled into a ball on one side of the empty bed. Feeling the chill creeping up her spine and the bitter cold biting through her skins. Her body was trembling with every breath she took. The night was windy with strong breezes. The rain outside was light as it accompanied the thunderstorms from the distance. So far away yet still so loud. Moonlight shone the lonely room from the black window. She was on the verge of crying, silently. Tears were emerging from the corner of her beautiful, green eyes. Her hands curled up into a ball of fist as she clutched her bedsheets. The other hand of hers, shook badly as it covered her mouth. The white, silky nightgown didn't cover the thin, small, vulnerable body. Thick blanket was the best rescue but it was damped there, untouched. The fan wasn't on, yet there was wind in the small, dark room.She ignored her messy, long, black hair spread on the pillow. Her red, full lips started to shake as she bit hard on her tongue. Her heart was yearning, & it was all that she could think. The clouds were black & white with drops. There was no creature outside there to be able to help the helpless, lonely lady. While the oceans waves kept crashing & the tall trees kept waving, the body & heart of a beautiful lady in her lonely room kept breaking & breaking. As she was afraid of the fear of time....

I am an invisible girl. I wear a blanket over my head & I am a ghost & I don't cut holes where my eyes should be because I shouldn't have any eyes. Ghosts shouldn't have any eyes because they don't have to worry about running into stuff or seeing things they shouldn't see because they're ghosts & they're dead & they've already seen the worst so now they can rest their little blank eyes in darkness. I am an invisible girl & I am a pretend ghost. I am always pretending I'm something else. Something other than a scared little child even though I know that's all you see me as. I know you see me as fragile. As someone who could be broken so easily, like I'm only held together with scotch tape. Like the only thing keeping my insides from the outside is the thin layer of transparent skin that I have left. He says he’s walking along a copper wire line, trying to balance between the what if's & the what could've beens. But he doesn't understand. He can't understand. When I was younger, I used to look at puddles, & think that everything that had been mirrored into it was really a part of a parallel universe. That everything that was going on in my world was being mimicked in another. Now, looking at the cars passing on the wet, rain-drenched roads, I notice that what is reflected is not an act of mimicry. No. Not this time. This time, the headlights are absorbed into the gravel, creating bars of light that seem to go on forever. Forever and ever into the earth, down to the very core. & I wonder if that parallel dimension exists, here & now. Because if it did, would the cars be columns of light & luminosity? The bars traveling in pairs across a blurry trail? I wonder.

I used to keep my promises in a cereal box. & You always quenched my summer mornings with your reassurances. There are some things I could have relied on, like a sure bet. Perhaps I should first have you realize that paper butterflies are not born from chrysalises. They were never caterpillars,they never had a first chance at life.    They've never chased their reflection broken & nearly flightless on a pond. They've never aspired to fly to the moon, fly to the sun & be back before the morning.   They've never feared spider webs, bird beaks, dream catchers hanging from the window panes & confusing them for nightmares.   Holding them between our fingers & pretending to be gentle.  It's just us storing things away that we could have never kept, only to find we'll never get them back anyway.

There were stars outside & in the places where your eyes used to be but they weren't real. They were made out of paper & your bones were made out of paper & we danced in the driveway but neither of us are going to remember it in three years. & In three years you'll be somewhere & I'll be nowhere or here which is worse than nowhere. I won't notice the way your skin feels like metal or how you taste like something I don't want to know about. It will be six in the morning & we won't go to sleep and we'll watch the birds wake up from their hiding places. We'll be the only ones who know where birds go at night. The sun will come up but it will be slow & it won't match the rhythm of our heart beats. We'll want to smoke but we won't have any cigarettes & nothing will be perfect but we'll pretend it is. We'll pretend that at some point in the morning, everything is quiet & everyone freezes & their lives freeze & their minds freeze & we'll be the only ones that can still move & live and think & we'll be jealous. She sips Pepsi from a straw because she likes the way it fizzes on her tongue, a thousand unshed words staining the parchment of her palm lines. At noon on cloudless days, she holds idle conversations with the sun, & when it rains, she writes reminiscences across foggy windows in hopes her dreams won't fade once her back is turned. Sometimes, she paints with chocolate & cream because when she's sad, she only sees in grainy sepia, but she never let it bother her. They twirl empty fingers through foggy sunrises as their eyes lock across the haze of hello, but they'll never understand that the lightning caressing their veins is a hint to slow down. It's the neon-ridged glow of love in the making, but their battles lie heavy on drooping shoulders & they'll never notice the signs. Sometimes, love isn't the fairytale story after all, but an on-ramp we neglected to take. & Eventually, she'll write her way into the arms of a rapist & he'll drink his way into destruction, because sometimes, cupid misses his mark.

She punches 4/4 beats on the door until her knuckles shatter. She grabs her head, presses her thumbs in her eyes & tries not to scream. It's been two days. The door opened twenty minutes ago & she told Him she'd swallow sunlight & nothing else. The slamming door nearly broke her nose. She's dancing in the darkness to stay sane. She's remembering home. It's been four days. She's wondering if she could hang herself with her own hair. The tiny room smells like radio wire & chlorine & she's pressing her cheek against the floor trying to hear her heartbeat in her hips.

I imagine them blue-faced & purple-lipped, clinging to the sharp edges of my imploding mind. I imagine them gasping for air bubbles & clawing at the walls, fingers going limp, feet twitching before they finally release & sink like stone to the mossy floor. In this screaming silence, I find peace. In the midst of the howling verse & raging chorus, I find my mind blank to the fury of the storm. I don't think about bleeding stitches or begging hearts. I don't think about drunken kisses with whiskey-fingers prying reality away. Flying down the freeway, deaf & saltwater-blind, I can claw out a cave in the midst of the chaos & crawl inside the emptiness. I can crank the volume up & let my guard down, relax my white-knuckle grip on sanity, my fierce attempt to hold it together. While cocooned in the sound, lost in the airwaves, I can stop pretending I'm whole, alright, fine. I can glance in the rear view mirror & let my chest collapse, let the truth release its binding hold on my lungs. I'm being thrown about by the wind & calling it flying.

People walking with umbrellas, streetlamps glowing pink, shiny yellow taxis. He felt like opening the window, standing up on the sill, & pushing off hard into the dark. It felt to him that as long as he could immerse himself in new stories every afternoon & evening, it wouldn't matter what happen to him in his own life, he'd be OK. He wrapped his arms tightly around his legs, but the world around him swayed. It swayed like the carousel in the park when he was a kid, when his stomach turned & he wanted off but the carousel wouldn't stop, the horses, elephants, & chickens kept spinning, the lights attached to the ceiling flashed & the music played. & As it had back then,dread now crept into his mind. What if this never ends?What if he never finds solid ground, can never walk straight ahead at his own pace, his stomach calm & his thoughts clear? What if this all just goes on & on, mother buys cotton candy from a pale clown & waves smilingly at him over the pink cloud but never comes to take him off the ride?

She is the kind of girl who choose to be your friend only after she calculated the diameter of your spotlight. Her face told the tale of a happy, uncomplicated life. I could detect no tragedy there. How could those years suddenly seem insignificant & dream-like? The words that hurt more than any other knife in the world. I am all the things that I deserve. This simple prayer has been said for seven years, & so the words are robotically gibbered. What it left in its wake was a ugly, spin art mess. There's the long morning when you don't have to look at your watch. There's the smell of sun-warmed dog shit & damp earth. There's a child in muddied waterproofs whose tongue darts out around his ice-cream moustache. The man has stripes of facial hair streaked across his cheeks. The tip of his nose is raw & pinkish. The rest of his skin is fluorescent, chicken nugget white. Big crystal clear teardrops roll from his eyes & drop like aquatic bombs onto his jacket. Twenty five years worth of tears seemed to have been stored up & were now desperate for escape; out they came in a salty exodus.

Change my life & turn my limbs to careless toys.

This is how we say goodbye to dying lovers & the grass. We say goodbye in coffee stains that never seem to go away. In the stale aftermath of settled cigarette smoke in lonely rooms, & on a park bench where an old man sits, remembering youth & glory & a kiss stolen by so many years it may never have happened. We say goodbye in every hour, every day, & every mile we have to walk alone.

I run barefoot through abandoned houses & across broken bridges & down steep slopes & across the shores of a thousand dead seas & up the path of a hundred corroded forests. I cry behind tree stumps & laugh beside dead animals, pray alongside earthquakes & ride the wind with the butterflies that are screaming, because they know their existence is pointless. I am the boy that dashes across front yards, trips down unslanted hills, & ties ribbons to my fingers & scurry them on top of hills, to portray images of myself controlling the world. I step across ant piles, & run my fingers through cold water creeks, & lay in dead corn fields & converse with mice, & hunt with grasshoppers, & scream with snakes, & laugh with myself. I have become crooked teeth from falling over invisible dead deer, & I have become broken limbs from trying to jump off cliffs to reach for the stars.
